SUNDAY (Dimanche)

Market Day in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue,
A Painter's dream in Roussillon

After breakfast, we will depart for a morning visit of the colorful and famous food and antique markets of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. It is easy to fall in love with this small town, the "Venice of the Comtat" -- so called because here the green waters of the river Sorgue divide into five branches that form a series of islands. Take a tour of the food market, visit the baroque 17th-century church Notre-Dame-des-Anges, and take a stroll along the river banks lined with plane trees (platanes).   Then have fun browsing at the antiques displayed in the open-air flea market (marche aux puces), or visit the antiquaires (antique dealers) along the water -- where you may discover the object of your dreams!

LUNCH:
We invite you for a champagne reception and a delightful lunch served with Côtes du Luberon wine at our house in the countryside, next to a charming Provençal village.

After lunch we will head up to the Luberon hilltop villages and visit striking Roussillon (from roux, red),  nicknamed the "Colorado of the Luberon," its name due to the stunning seventeen hues of ocher coloring the facades of the houses. Here, the deep red  and golden yellow quarries, set among the green pines trees and the rich blue sky, create a fantastic universe.  The panoramic view of the Luberon will take your breath away.  Roussillon is a magic place, with many art and crafts galleries representing excellent local artists.  Paintings of Provençal landscapes, and pottery made from the ochre clay and blends of mineral oxides will delight you.  Take a tour of the village with its colorful streets, small gardens and squares, visit the 11th century church, and admire a lovely view of the Val des Fees (fairy valley) and the rust red cliffs.  Then, if you wish, sit at a café on the Place de la Mairie with its 18th century houses.

EVENING: After this enlightening introduction to Provence, free evening for dining out if you wish.
